一 | (ECNS) -- The Three Gorges New Energy Jiangsu Rudong 800-megawatt offshore wind power project, Asia’s first offshore wind project to use flexible direct current (DC) transmission, had generated more than 10 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity as of Monday. Located in the Huangshayang sea area off Rudong, Jiangsu Province, the project has a total installed capacity of 800 megawatts and is equipped with Asia’s first offshore flexible DC converter station. It became fully operational in 2021. Compared with conventional alternating current (AC) transmission, the system has reduced transmission losses by about 1.2 percentage points and saved more than 735 million yuan ($102 million) in costs, according to Wang Xuefeng, deputy general manager of the Nantong company under the Jiangsu branch of Three Gorges Energy. Flexible DC transmission enables large-scale, long-distance power transmission while enhancing the stability of offshore wind power integration into the grid. The technology is expected to support the expansion of offshore wind farms into deeper and more distant waters. The 10 billion kWh of clean electricity generated is estimated to be equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of about 4 million households. It has also saved about 3 million metric tons of standard coal and reduced carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 7.4 million metric tons. (By Helen Mo, intern Liu Shuangjing)
